Mathematics for school students in Almaty
Systematic support for school maths, and thinking that travels
The mathematics program for grades 1–11 is built around mastering the school curriculum properly, closing gaps in what a student knows, and developing the ability to solve problems at a range of difficulty levels.
Lessons are not about copying worked examples. A student reads the problem, chooses an approach and justifies the result. Content is set by grade, current level and the goals the family has in mind.
The school curriculum
Lessons follow the core content of the school course and help a student work through and consolidate each topic in turn.
- learning and consolidating the core topics of the school course
- finding and closing gaps in knowledge
- building durable subject skills
- working through difficult topics and question types
- applying rules and methods in practice
- solving problems across difficulty levels
- preparing for tests and assessments
- working through tasks independently
Logic and reasoning work
Alongside the curriculum, students regularly work on tasks that develop logical thinking and the ability to apply what they know in unfamiliar situations.
- analysing and comparing information
- spotting patterns and relationships
- classifying and organising
- spatial and quantitative thinking
- solving non-standard problems
- finding more than one route to an answer
- choosing the most efficient method
- building an argument step by step
Preparation for entry to Kazakhstan's lyceums
A distinct strand of the program prepares students for competitive selection and entrance exams. It suits students planning to apply to Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools (NIS), Bilim-Innovation Lyceums (BIL), specialised lyceums and other institutions that select by examination.
- reading a problem and picking out what matters
- logical, sequential reasoning
- identifying patterns
- solving non-standard problems
- applying knowledge in new situations
- choosing an efficient method
- working to a time limit
- checking and justifying the answer
An individual approach
The content and difficulty of the work are set by the student's grade and age, their current level, the gaps they have, the pace at which they absorb material and the goals agreed with the family. The teacher identifies the main sticking points and works through them in order.
What to expect
- handles the school curriculum with more confidence
- has firmer foundations
- has closed the gaps that were there
- solves problems across difficulty levels
- chooses an approach without being told one
- reasons logically and in sequence
- can explain and justify a solution
- has experience with non-standard problems
We combine the school curriculum, steady practice and reasoning work so that a student does not merely know the algorithms but understands how to apply what they know to problems they have not seen before.
